In John 14 Jesus tells his disciples that they can ask for anything “in my name” and He will do what is asked. Really! Wow, what a position of privilege Jesus has given to His followers, anything we want and ask for in his name, He will do it for us!
Now come on, anything? Here’s the qualifier, “anything in my name…” OK, so what does that mean, in Jesus’ name? I know from experience that calling on the name of Jesus in my prayer doesn’t guarantee that I will get the thing I prayed for. I’ve prayed calling on Jesus’ name that I would win the lottery – didn’t get it. Prayed earnestly and repeatedly in Jesus’ name for healing for a loved one and death came instead. Prayed in Jesus’ name for a peaceful reconciliation in a troubled relationship and it didn’t happen. So, what does it mean to pray asking for things in Jesus’ name, and I add from the text (John 14:14), “so that the Son can bring glory to the Father.”
When we pray in Jesus’ name asking for those things that will bring glory to the Father, we have the assurance from the Son himself that He will give it to us. My asking for a big lottery win would not have given glory to the Father. I’m not the best money manager and the Father spared me the grief of having instant unearned monetary wealth at my disposal. When I prayed for healing for my father, the Lord granted that request with the ultimate eternal healing that is promised to all believers. Not what I wanted at the time, but he gave the greatest healing one can receive, life without end. Reconciliation of a relationship; I’m still wondering about that one – perhaps, yet to be revealed in God’s timing. I’ll wait and see.
Living by faith trusting the promises of our Savior, receiving God’s forgiveness and giving it to others, and eagerly anticipating our eternal salvation all bring glory to the Father. These things he will do! Guaranteed! Test him in this. Pray for those things that will bring glory to the Father in Jesus’ name and believe that he will accomplish it.
