Scripture Reading:

1 John 5:14-15:

And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him.  And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.

On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 as the highest score), rate yourself on how confident you are that God hears and answers your prayers and explain your answer.

As you grow as a disciple of Jesus, are you getting more or less confident in God answering your prayers?  It’s easy to get discouraged in your prayer life and wonder if it is worth bothering to pray.  An old cartoon pictured a young boy kneeling in prayer. He seemed to be upset with God and said, “Aunt Susan hasn’t gotten married, Uncle Mark hasn’t any work, and Daddy’s hair is still falling out.… I’m getting tired of praying for this family without getting any results.  Sound familiar?

Yet these Bible verses from 1 John seem to say something so different: being confident that God hears our prayers and that He will give us whatever we ask, if we pray according to His will. Prayer is coming confidently into the presence of the living God who delights in hearing and answering the prayers of His children. Our confidence is not in ourselves, but in our Savior Jesus Christ who came to us, died for us on the cross, rose from the dead, and intercedes for us.  Jesus spoke some amazing words to the Father regarding prayer. Jesus confidently said to the Father at the raising of Lazarus, “You always hear me.” (John.11:42)

We can rest assured that our prayers are heard through Christ and will be answered according to God’s gracious will.  Andrew Murray wrote, “The power of prayer rests in the faith that God hears it.  The moment I am assured that God hears, I feel drawn to pray and to persevere in prayer.”  May we pray with confidence to the God who hears us!

Just imagine… what God could do through us if we prayed boldly and confidently expecting him to answer our prayers.

How would your prayers change if you really believed that God hears and answers your prayers?

Heavenly Father, I pray to You asking that You will increase my faith and confidence in Your willingness to hear my prayers and in Your ability to answer them.  Help me to make requests for things which please You and advance Your kingdom; through Christ my Savior and Lord.  Amen.
