Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
– 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (NLT)
What New Year’s resolutions did you make this year? How’s it going? Are you on your way to accomplishing them?
Every January, health clubs are packed with people who are hoping this year will bring a positive change. People start fad diets, exercise plans, and a myriad of other changes they’d like to see happen. Then all too often good intentions fizzle out before January is over. Why? It’s because we are doing it in our own strength.
Last fall when my small group was doing the Circle Maker series we each shared our biggest dream and one road block keeping us from achieving it. We chose a prayer partner that was willing to pray for that dream, need or fear for 21 days. My life was transformed in that small group session. I shared that I was having back pain and it just wasn’t healing and surgery wasn’t a viable option. My dream was to lose over 100 pounds and be pain free so I could enjoy bike rides with my grandkids by next summer. My prayer partner prayed for my healing that night. He also prayed that God would provide a team of people to help me make the needed changes so I could serve Him in a greater capacity. The very next day my ‘team’ took shape, a chiropractor, physical therapist, my medical doctor and several other supportive people. I couldn’t believe it!
This verse constantly speaks to me on this journey. I’ve tried to lose weight on my own many times without success. This time I’m succeeding. Because of Jesus death for me, I belong to Him. The Holy Spirit has given me everything I need and is guiding me into an exciting new opportunity to serve Him. All I need to do is submit and follow where He leads.
Just imagine…what God could do through us as we treat our bodies as a temple of the Holy Spirit and encourage others to honor God with their bodies.
I encourage you to think BIG. Think about something that is beyond your reach to accomplish on your own. Share your dream with someone, pray together about it, and see where He leads you!
Gracious Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit living in me, ready and waiting to lead me on an amazing journey of accomplishing things beyond my power. I will need Your help and the help of others to persevere on the path where You are leading me. Amen.
