But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
– 1 Peter 2:9
How does it feel to be chosen—for a team, a date, a job? If you weren’t really expecting to be chosen, does that affect how you act after you are selected?
In today’s scripture, the apostle Peter has been talking about the futility of those who do not believe in God’s good news, Jesus Christ. Now he turns to his Christian readers and declares that they have been chosen by God! Being honest with ourselves, we know this is not due to anything we have done. But God has reasons of His own, beginning with His love for us and His desire to make us holy. In fact, he goes so far as to make us priests, to set us apart from the rest of the world to be His holy people.
In most religious traditions, the priests are the gatekeepers, controlling the access that ‘ordinary folks’ have to the deity. But our God did not choose us to keep people out, but to bring people in. Seeing what God has done in our lives can give hope to those who still need God’s love to rule their lives as well.
What has God done in your life? He has chosen you to make Christ’s love apparent to those around you. So let His light shine through you, always being ready to share your struggles and His salvation with those around you.
Just imagine… if we lived out our lives knowing we were chosen to show others the goodness of God.
Recall a significant event in your life; it may be a blessing or a trial. That is a part of you, a part of the “chosen you.” Prepare your heart and mind now to be ready to let God use that, to use you, to build the faith of others.
Heavenly Father, You have created me in just the right way to serve your purposes. Let me never doubt the fact or the wisdom of Your choosing me to be one of Your holy priests, to be part of Your holy nation, to the end that all nations will be drawn to You. This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
